Found another mysterious little court drama, too fragmentary
to parse completely (although it may have had something to do
with a case recorded immediately following, involving a Mary
CROSSE and some pilfered bags of malt in which Ezekiel NORTHEN
was a juryman and Richard SWANE was "warned"):
"Ezekiel Northen fined.
"Rich: Swan fined three shillings, and to pay fees of
Ezekell Northen and court. [Richard Swaine of Rowley
presented, 10: 8mo: 1650, for breach of the peace in
striking Ezekiel Northen in the face with a staff or goad.
Witnesses: Deacon Mitchall and Good Acey.--Files.]"

Hope this is of interest. If it isn't, just strike me in the
face with a staff or goad. :)

Richard Swan (Swanne) was a next door neighbor of Robert
Haseltine in
Rowley, Ma.
Richard Swan joined the church in Boston 6 Jan 1638/39. His son,
John
Swanne, was christened in Boston the next week 13 Jan 1638/39
Richard Swanne was dismissed from Boston 24 Nov 1639 with others

The Boston church records of Richard Swan, before he went to
Rowley, Swan was spelled Swanne. Joanna (Swanne/Swan) Haseltine was
the mother of Robert and John Haseltine of Rowley, Mass. At one time
Robert Haseltine lived next door to Richard Swan in Rowley, Mass.
Haseltine was spelled Heseltine in most of the Howden parish
records in the period before 1640. It was spelled Heseltine in the
one time it was found in the Boston Church records.
The parish records of Eastrington (which is an East Yorkshire
parish - next to the parish of Howden) can only be found as the
original parish book. The book has never been transcribed, copied, or
filmed by LDS - to anyones knowledge. I believe I saw a filmed copy
before the curator at the record office took the original book from
the safe. Others who have asked - were told there is no copy.
The original Eastrington Parish book is located in the Record
Office - Beverley, Humberside, England.
I have not seen the will of Richard Swan written 25 Apr 1678 and
proved 23 May 1678 nor have I seen the will of Ann (widow Trumble)
Swan written 4 Jul 1678 and proved 24 Sep 1678.
My thoughts:
1. Richard Swan married twice. First wife was Anna Spofford by whom
he had all his children.
2. Second wife - Ann Widow os John Trumble. According to Richard
Swan's will "bequeath to wife Ann as by marriage contract ...". This
probably means she came to this marriage with assets given her by her
deceased husband(s) which upon her death was to go to her children by
her desceased husband(s).
3. According to Gary Murray of Oregon, Widow Ann Trumble was married
three times - the last being Richard Swan. This seems to be true from
her will.
4. Ann's will - 4 July pro. 24 Sep 1678. (To her children before her
marriage to Richard Swan).
a. Abigail ( ) Bayley
b. Mary ( ) Kilborne
c. Caleb Hopkinson
d. John Hopkinson
e. Jonathan Hopkinson
f. John Trumble
"to Caleb Hopkinson a chest that father Gott made"
5. The folowing is only speculation
a. Ann's maiden name was Gott
b. Ann's 1st husband was Hopkinson
c. Ann's 2nd husband was Trumble
d. Ann's 3rd husband was Richard Swan
6. Richard Swan's 1st wife was Anna Spofford - whom he married 24 Feb
1622 at South Cave parish. The information is found in the IGI. In
1622 the parish of South Cave was on one side of Eastrington parish
and the parish of Howden was on the othe side of Eastrington parish.
7. Time line of Richard Swan's 2nd marriage
a. 1657 July 18 - burial of John Trumble husband of Ann
(Gott) Hopkinson Trubmble
b. 1658 Apr 4 - burial of Anna (Spofford) Swan - 1st wife of
Richard Swan
c. 1658/59 Mar 1 - marriage of Richard Swan to Widow
Ann Trumble
8. Richard Swan predeceased his second wife Ann (Widow Trumble). In
his will he name his children
a. Robert and Robert's son Richard (Richard did not have son
Richard)
b. Joseph Boynton son-in-law & wife Sarah (Swan) and their
children
Elizabeth Boynton, Samuel Boynton, & Sarah Boynton
c. dau. Frances Quilter
d. dau. Dorothy Chapman
e. dau. Mercy Warner
9. Richard Swan's children

6. Richard Swanne/Swan was a next door neighbor of Robert Haseltine
in Rowley Mass.
6. Richard Swanne/Swan did not have a son Richard or Jonathan. His
son 68. John may have also been called Jonathan, but there were not
two men. The mistake on about Richard may have come about from the
will of 6.
Richard Swan - he mentions his son Robert and Robert's son Richard.
Therefore the Richard mentioned was a grandson Richard. The Jonathan
mistake may have come about because in Ann (Gott) Hopkinson Trumble
Swan's will she named her children and among them was John Trumble and
Jonathan Trumble. Neither were Swans
Just a thought. Another thought - the parish records of South Cave
should be checked for 6.Richard's marriage. The IGI only extracted
the facts. They would not tell if Richard was from another parish
and which one. I would do it but it would cost me about $10 and
Richard is not my ancestor. Let me know if anyone see the record.

I just found that there was a Spofford family in early Rowley, Ma. I
wonder if they are from South Cave Parish and perhaps related to Anna

Alice - received both your messages. I wish I didn't make
mistakes.
Thought you might be interested in part of a time line I did on
Richard Swan. I believe he came with Rev. Ezekiel Rogers. I don't
believe the people who came with Rev. Rogers were all members of his
church. They were simply members of the Puritan movement in that
area.
Rev. Ezekiel Rogers was expelled from St Peter's church Rowley,
York,
Eng 6 Jun 1636. They did not sail from Hull until the Summer of 1638.
The group wintered at Salem, Boston, Dorchester, Ipswich, and
Quinnipiac (New Haven) USA.
Now to Richard Swan - I believe he arrived with his family and a new born son, John. Richard wanted his son christened and had to join the church at Boston in order to have his son christened there.
Boston Church Records - They may not be the original, but a lovely handwritten copy.
