Claude R Sterling, 80, formerly of 149 Jackman Street, died late Sunday morning in the Jefferson county hospital, where had been a patient since Dec 29th. Death was attributed primarily to a heart condition and infirmities of old age.
The funeral will be a 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the Cummings funeral home. Rev. Don R Boyd, pastor of the Asbury Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Dexter Cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Camille) Schlicher, Rome and Mrs. Hulbert (Dora) Harten, Pulaski, a son Carlisle N Sterling, Cleveland, OH, a sister Mrs. Orval (Maude) Reed, Sackets Harbor and three grandchildren.
Mr. Sterling was born July 11, 1876 at Mannsville, a son of Adolphus and Martha Wilder Sterling. As a child, he moved to Dexter with his parents and lived there until twelve years ago when he moved to this city.
A paper worker, he was once employed in St. Lawrence Paper and Frontenac paper mills of Dexter. He was at one time proprietor of the old International and Dexter hotels of Dexter.
Prior to moving to this city he lived at the old American hotel on the town of Hounsfield side of the Black River at Dexter. He was a W.P.A worker employed on town of Hounsfield highways prior to his retirement.
Mr. Sterling married Miss Erma L Nash on Aug. 25, 1894 in the town of LeRay. She died in November, 1939.
At one time Mr. Sterling was associated with William Ellison in the hose-dealing business and the training
and racing of race horses.
